John McAfee, the famed developer of the namesake antivirus, was discovered dead in a jail cell in Spain. Unfortunately, this occurred just hours after his extradition to the United States was approved.
McAfee was apprehended at a Spanish airport in the fall of 2020. Between 2014 and 2018, he was convicted of tax evasion and has since been imprisoned near Barcelona.
The entrepreneur gained “millions of dollars” from digital currencies, his consultations connected to them, and ICOs, according to the US Department of Justice, and concealed the ownership of different assets. They discovered real estate, a car, and a yacht registered in the names of dummies among them. He faced a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail if convicted of all counts.
McAfee’s death was certified by the Spanish Ministry of Justice, and his lawyer stated that the entrepreneur most likely committed suicide. As a result, the Internet was inundated with rumors and conspiracy theories of all degrees of deception. Unfortunately, at the same time, some of them appeared to be too honest, and they swiftly spread over social media.
One of these was a tweet from an American businessman following his arrest in October 2020. McAfee stated that he had friends in jail and that he was content with his situation and clarified that if he were discovered hung, as Epstein was, it would not be his fault. This left us with a lot of room for conspiracy theories as well as more rational thinking. For example, consider the appropriateness of American justice’s method, which drives individuals to extreme measures.
It’s also worth mentioning that McAfee claimed shortly after his arrest that living in a Spanish prison is similar to Hilton hotels when compared to American prisons. According to him, there is no “humanity” in the latter. Some speculate that this was the catalyst for the programmer’s suicide.
